Some recent artwork along with a gift from Iceland (below the painting)...The gift was given to me by my friend Amie, after I made the artwork! With the new studio up comes some new artwork/sculpture on the way. Also...

Awards galore! Not for me, but for my students....some of my students who I private teach won some awards for an art/illustration contest that will go to the national level now! 2 of them got honorable mentions, one got 2nd place in her division, and one got 3rd place in her division as well as a 1st place (2 different illustrations that won)! Wow, and good luck continuing on with the contest!! Very exciting...

Two of my favorite authors died recently.

I thought I'd repost this image of mine. It was one in a series of Salinger books/stories I did for fun a while back. By coincidence I was re-reading A People's History for fun also, recently, as in the past I've always read it out of order (not sequentially). This is sad news but not really so, as both lived very full, long lives.

My friend Shel-Lyons (Michele Woodruff, as I have been calling her since the 6th grade) has some recent interesting articles out on childbirth and reproductive rights (from her organization, the Mothers' Rights Network). You will be surprised how many rights women (mothers-to-be) do not have when it comes to their own childbirth. Above was for a recent article written about the "a-word" (abortion). I interpret her experience of the "a-word" as a modern day Scarlet Letter for women, taboo even amongst women's rights advocates and childbirth reformers... Check out this image in the next AI-28--American Illustration--book (selected image) coming out later this year! Also please check out some shirt designs I recently did for a company called Green Goods (an eco-friendly shirt company) who are selling to Barneys on my graphics blog.

I am really happy to have another illustration in the AI annual as it is quite an honor to be picked...I especially liked that they chose this particular piece of mine for both the book and web.

NEW YORK SI51

So I finally made it out to NY, for Society of Illustrators 51. As I mentioned earlier I was completely surprised to have won the gold medal in Uncommissioned work, as this is the first time I have ever entered, and I only entered a few pieces at that....

Just getting into the annual would have made my day to be honest, as it is a difficult task in it of itself to accomplish-- so this was quite an honor--and I am so lucky to have won a medal on a piece that was a part of my personal work, as well.

Here is me being a dork by my piece in the gallery...

The silver medalists and medalist for Art Director had Amazing work and resumes as well (to which my experience--or non existent experience--paled in comparison). I was admiring Takahisa Hashimoto's work when I first got there, before knowing he won anything...(such intricate detail)! It was awesome.

Here is a bad picture of me accepting the award, as well as fumbling through a unexpected speech (in which I don't remember a single thing I said). I guess I would have expected it if I had ever gone to one of these before (since everyone else seemed to know the format and what to expect). But I was taken by surprise to say the least. Also shown is Frank Stockton (an Amazing illustrator himself!) posing delightfully with my frame. I was so glad to have bumped into a familiar face, as Frank has always been so encouraging and helpful with valuble words of advice, whenever I run into him...

I may have been the 1st medalist that was so fresh to the annual that the winning piece was a piece I made as a student, (which Shocks the hellouttame!) and I wish I could have done more research and prepared something with more substance to say when I had the chance......

I am impressed and awed at how established, traditional and

all-around amazing the Society was in person when I got there...

They were so kind, congratulatory and welcoming.

Oh, and of course there was food...

Stopped by to eat at Katz Deli (Est. in 1888)--

When Harry Met Sally was filmed. It was packed of course,

but the world famous pastrami

sandwich was worth the 16 bucks!

It was said that the workers know

you're out of town, especially

if you order the turkey...

which was really funny when we saw these girls (totally

from LA) in front of us, ordering the turkey...

Also ate at The Palm Restaurant (the original location). If you're a fan of any kind of aged steak (or any kind of crab) this is the place for you...Thought it was fitting as they were known, when 1st established, to give spaghetti in exchange for Editorial artists decorating their walls with illustrations. Too bad they didn't trade any of my artwork for my steak!

Made some more art with silkscreening/painting/digital effects...

Needed pieces for upcoming contests and am making new mailers--This piece is based on a set of work on global warming, the melting polar ice caps, and the depleting population of starved polar bears (eventually turning to anorexia because of the lack of food). Around 1930 we first started to notice the effects that global human polution had on nature. By 2040 we will barely have any ice caps left...

SOCIETY OF ILLUSTRATORS 51

Many updates are needed as I have neglected my blog for some time now... In professional news, today I got a phone call about being accepted into Society of Illustrators 51 annual (the NY edition)! This is extremely exciting for me as I have been SO busy with other work that I feel I haven't had enough time to create new illustrations for publishing/editorial (the piece accepted was my piece also selected for American Illustration 27, pictured in the previous blog). To make things even better, they awarded me the Gold Medal in my division for "Uncommissioned" (work), which I am Stunned, utterly Shocked, and Sooo incredibly very grateful for... The shocking news definately made my day though... I am going to go to NY for that ceremony sometime in March, to accept the medal.

An update on my friend Andrea's Oprah experience/restaurant...she was recently on Oprah as a guest person in a cooking contest which was crazy to hear! (Thats her in the Oprah Apron):) Oprah, Gale and all them totally support her dream (for opening a restaurant)!! She needs art people/artists, so when the time comes, I will for sure be in need of artists, designers, interior space designers, muralists, etc. to ensure that this restaurant looks as bomb as the food tastes...(and that's asking for a lot, trust me!!). So if you are up to it, and know me from Art Center, let me know....we need to make art art art!! (For a good cause...the cause of gourment FOOD)....
